The grave claimed by the Church to be that of Saint Peter lies at the foot of the aedicula beneath the floor. La tombe présentée par l'Église comme étant celle de saint Pierre se trouve au pied de l'édicule sous le sol.

The cella floor was inlaid with opus sectile, fragments of which have been retrieved, and the base of an aedicula which was installed at the cella's center is still in place. Margherita Guarducci argued that these were the remains of Saint Peter and that they had been moved into a niche in the graffiti wall from the grave under the aedicula "at the time of Constantine, after the peace of the church" (313). The design of this central aediculum-like, niche of the upper level is similar to the architecture of the scaenae frons (façade of ancient stage buildings) and highly evocative of the representations of aedicula in wall painting of the 2nd Pompeian style. La conception de cette niche centrale, semblable à un aediculum, au niveau supérieur, est similaire à l'architecture d'un frons scaenae (façade des anciens bâtiments de scène des théâtres) et n'est pas sans rappeler les représentations des édicules de la peinture murale du deuxième style pompéien.

In 1953, after the initial archeological efforts had been completed, another set of bones were found that were said to have been removed without the archeologists' knowledge from a niche (loculus) in the north side of a wall (the graffiti wall) that abuts the red wall on the right of the aedicula. En 1953, après avoir achevé les premiers travaux archéologiques, un autre ensemble d'os est trouvé : ceux-ci auraient été enlevés à l'insu des archéologues à partir d'une niche (loculus) du côté nord d'un mur (le mur de graffiti) qui vient buter contre le mur rouge sur la droite de l'édicule.
