The Byzantine sources have not recorded the aftermath of the battle but, according to the accounts of the contemporary Arab historian Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, the Bulgarians marched towards Constantinople. Letter 8, Jarir ibn Abdullah Bajali (a companion of Ali) was sent by Ali to Damascus to deliver a letter to Muawiyah I. Some delay occurred in Jarir's return which made Ali worried about his safety.
