因为其一是钢板的硬度大，一般做船体的钢板厚度在20mm以上，即便使用机械加工，也很难控制弯曲的力度；其二是精度要求高，如果加工精度不够的话，多个钢板将无法拼装，将造成工程质量不合格和导致大量的钢板浪费。因此在造船方面要实现无缝装配( seamlessassembly ) ，对加工的精度要求很严格。这就需要从船体钢板的加工自动化和精度的提高方面来考虑完善造船工艺，提高造船的效率。
